Description
Field Hospitals were the smallest (100-400 beds) and the most mobile of the Army's hospital medical units , and served closest to the front lines of battle . From its activation in July 1942 until February 1943 , the members of the 12th Field Hospital received training at the station hospital at Camp Bowie . In February and March 1943 , the unit moved into the field and set up a Battalion Aid Station , a Collection Station , and part of a Field Hospital under simulated combat conditions . The personnel of the unit were divided into 3 platoons and each spent time assigned to each of these installations in order to gain familiarity with the various types of medical service supplied in the forward echelons during combat . After their training at Camp Bowie , the unit was transferred to the Desert Training Center in Freda , California for several months . In October 1943 the unit sailed from New York to the United Kingdom to begin 23 months of overseas service .
