Description |
Camera roll 023 is one of seven camera rolls (016, 020, 021, 022, 023, 023A, 024) used to film a Pentecostal brush arbor meeting held in the summer of 1978, in Winona, Mo. Construction of the brush arbor itself is on camera rolls 001 and 002 of this collection. Many of the same people appear in both sequences. The service lasted nearly three hours and only portions of it were filmed. Camera roll 023 begins with the song "I'll Walk These Hills" followed by a repeat of the song. The remainder of the roll contains preaching and an "old fashioned altar call" by Brother Lonnie, who refers to himself as "king of brush arbors." Brother Lonnie's preaching lasted much longer than the five minutes captured on film. Watching the sequence from beginning to end, however, gives a good sense of the style and shape of Pentecostal preaching: a soft, low-key start followed by a long crescendo and finishing with the intense pleading of the altar call. Two cameras were used to film the brush arbor sequence. During parts of the service both cameras covered the same action from different angles. At other time, one camera covered the preacher or singers while the other filmed cutaways of the audience. Rolls 016, 021, 023A are from camera one; rolls 020, 022, 023, 024 are from camera two. Brother Lonnie preaching is also on camera roll 023A. |
