Description
Neuropathologist Sarah A. Luse was one of the first to use electron microscopy to study cells in the nervous system and was an authority on the ultramicroscopic changes in brain cells caused by drugs , viruses , and cancer . The electron microscope used beams of electrons instead of visible light , permitting direct magnification of up to 100,000 times . In the mid-1950s , Luse used electron microscopy to show that a particular kind of brain cell was damaged by multiple sclerosis -- a discovery that was considered an important breakthrough in the study of the disease at the time .
