Description
The first surgical procedure performed at the newly opened Barnes Hospital in St . Louis on December 12 , 1914 was an appendectomy . Dr . Fred T . Murphy was the surgeon , assisted by Dr . Ernest Sachs , Dr . Arthur O . Fisher , and Dr . Brooks . The anesthetist , seated at the head of the operating table , was a nurse , Miss Farrar . Miss Farrar , who received training as an anesthetist at the Massachusetts General Hospital , gave or supervised the administration of all general anesthetics at Barnes Hospital .
