Description | The case State of MO vs. Elam Gott centered around the actions of the former sheriff of Dade County, Missouri, Elam P. Gott. According to the bill of indictment, Gott permitted and assisted the escape of a prisoner, named Robert Freedle, who was in prison on charges of assault with the intent to kill. While the case began in Dade County, a change of venue was granted to move the case to Greene County, Missouri. Unfortunately, the facts in this case are somewhat vague because the document contains no depositions or answers on the behalf of either of the parties involved. Also, the outcome of the case is unknown, though it may have ended in a mistrial in 1867 according to document four of this collection. |
