On board Steamer “Fred Lorenie” Memphis Tennessee March 28th 1863 Dear Pa [James Remley] We left St [Ste.] Genevieve [Missouri] about noon day before yesterday – the 26th – and have got this far on our way into “Dixie”. Our destination is said to be Yazoo City [Mississippi]. We are stopping here to take on coal and will go on down the river as soon as that is done. We go in company with three or four other boats loaded with Iowa & Illinois troops. Only three companies of the 22nd [Iowa Infantry] are on this boat, the rest having started down the river several days before we did Saw our paymaster – Penn Clark – this morning. He will accompany us on our way southward, I believe. After this I think it will be better to direct your letters to Cairo [Illinois]. Will write again whenever I have a chance to send the letter. We are both well. My love to all the family Your Son George A Remley PS. There are two “decks of cards” in operation on the same table that I am writing on – one on each side – They shake the table and jostle me so that I can hardly write G.A R
