Pea Ridge [Arkansas] Dec. 1st 1862 Dear Brother I write you a few lines to day to let you know I am all right since up at presant. on the 28th we had a brush withe the enemy at Cane hill [Arkansas] 50 miles South of here Gen [James G.] Blunt attacked them with his Brigade in a strong position and drove them 10 miles before our Brigade which was six miles behind came up. the loss was not very great on our side I think as I started the same night with Dispatches and did not hear the particulars. I came here with them this being the terminus of the telegraph. I start back to morrow. I came through without stopping and shall probably do the same going back. as we carry the mail Blunt and the whole of our command will probably advance on Ft Smith on the Arkansas river the last Strong hold of the rebbles if we drive them from there I do not know where they will go but probably to Texas. I have been to day over the battle ground of Pea Ridge It shows marks of very hard fighting the trees in place being cut to piecs by the shots I send a splinter from a tree that was shattered by a solid shot as a memento the position held by [Sterling] Price was an extremely Strong one and the only wonder is that Sigle [Franz Sigel] routed him at all.
