[1] February the 11th 1860 [MS torn] Dear children we are not as well as common I am a little sick with a fresh cold and Mikes wife is complaining with jaw ake and sore throat William [Hornaday Sr.] has been verry poorly and is not much better; Henry and Clark are hauling wood and the wind blows hard and cold but the ground is brown and bare we have had one snow about 7 or 8 inches deep fell the 25 of January and the 30 and 31st cold as greenland and one rain last saturday night the 4th and that is all the rain we have had since we come; the 2 first weeks was fine as Aprile wether; Mary White calls her little one Emma Elias Smith is not married to Unice Shields as reported: Anderson and Lyd have moved in With Mrs. White. they occupy the room at the foot of the stairs and one up stairss John Kirfman is about to move where Ratherford lives and ratherford will go on the widow Sherrods farm Mrs. White is tired of her man Henry and he will leave; Jasper Markwels school will be out the last of this month and the teacher is going to get up a great spree and aim to show Browns trial and execution they met last night to make arangments they have appointed Retherford Governor Wise and Mike Judge of the supreme court and Len Miller one of Browns lawyers Markwell is states attorney Jim Warner is one of the niggers and is to be hung Rese Burnet is high sherif; they will make a great I head scrape of it and flash in the pan is my notion of it; Mike is going over to town to look for news from his plunder he is in a sweat for fear they have gon the wrong road Pete talks of going on John Andersons farm in the Pat James house Wilson is going to ship someplace and Mrs Martin will come in Wilsons place; we Borrowed a lake salt Barrel and measured a Barrel of white corn as near like your corn as they could get and it made 1bushel and 3 pecks exacly what Elias smith said so with the 2 bushel that was took for feed

Description | This letter is from Martha Hornaday to her sons David and Minos Miller, written after they have left home but before Minos joined the 36th Iowa Infantry. She tells about the affairs of family and friends. David Miller is a book peddler and Minos is obviously with him since the letter is to them both. |
