Description
These three postcards illustrate the evolution of souvenir cards postcards. The first two are "front message space " cards characteristic of the period from 1902 to 1907 when the undivided back side could only be used for the address and stamp. That only left a small rectangle or white banner on the front where the correspondent could write a message. The front featured the name of a particular city , town , or tourist attraction-Joplin , Mo. in this case--spelled out in prominent lettering. A montage of black and white photograph images , either against a black background or a hand-tinted one , surrounded the name. With the advance of printing technology during the next decades , postcard publishing became much more sophisticated. Beginning in 1935 , many cards featured three-dimensional letters with colored instead of black backgrounds. The Curt Teich Company of Chicago , the most prolific postcard printer of the time , produced the majority of these cards. In 1942 , the company added color photograph montages inside the large letters and used bright backgrounds embellished with hand-drawn art work. The large letter style began to seem outdated and old-fashioned by the late 1940s , when real-photo postcards surged in popularity. However , the format continued to a lesser degree throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Sources : "The History of Large Letter Postcards.
