My Dear Major,
The enclosure accompanying your letter received this morning has made me sick at heart. It was a sore disappointment to me. I am very grateful to you for your kind & tender interest. Please accept my thanks. I have now done what best I could, applied in writing direct to Gen. Curtis, for his order to muster me out to accept "promotion" and Major White made an endorsement on it expressing his desire that the discharge be granted as he wanted my services as clerk. I await the event anxiously, and trust that Gen. McKean will not require my presence immediately.
With kind regards to Tatum and Monty,
I am Maj: Very Truly & Gratefully Yours
