Description |
Officers and nurses of the 12th Field Hospital during training at Camp Bowie, Texas in March 1943. Though some members of the 12th Field Hospital had been in training with the unit since July 1942, the orders to go overseas did not come until October 1943. The commanding officer, Lt. Col. George J. L. Wulff, Jr., had been activated in January 1942 and trained first with the 21st General Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia. Once overseas, the conditions were often difficult, supplies inadequate, and the workload oppressive. For example, while stationed in Aachen, Germany from February 11, 1945 to March 4, 1945, the total number of patients treated was over 10,000 and personnel were sometimes required to work continuously for 48 hours or longer. The 12th Field Hospital served in England, France, Belgium, and Germany during its service overseas. While stationed in England in June 1944, the unit treated casualties from the D-Day invasion. On June 26, 1944 the unit crossed the English Channel and established field hospitals in France (Barneville and Valognes). By the fall of that year, the unit had crossed into Belgium (Saint-Trond, Pepinster, Hasselt, Liege, and Namur). In the first months of 1945 the unit entered Germany and established operations in Aachen, Brand, and Hildesheim. |
