Description
Germany began air raids in France during the last months of the war . Though the personnel of Base Hospital 21 were 'treated ' every moonlit night to the sound of anti-aircraft guns and the whir of falling bombs , none of the bombs fell closer than about a mile from the hospital . In June 1918 the unit surrounded the patients ' huts with sandbags to offer some protection during air raids .
