Description
This Table Top Vase or Table Instrument was manufactured by T . Hawksley , Ltd. , ca. 1875 . Table instruments were designed to be placed in the center of a table or desktop - the multiple funnel openings allowed sound collection from any angle of the room . A long elastic tube conveyed the sound to the ear of the user . This example is made of heavy metal painted black , with one solid base and six funnel openings from the upper portion , three legs and one protruding piece for insertion of a conversation tube . The height is 12-3/4 inches . The 4-1/2 inch long funnel tubes have 3 inch wide openings . The conversation tube is missing .
