September 20, 1985 3 Sections 20 Pages 25 Cents Mexican earthquake kills at least 250 MEXICO CITY ( UPI) - A killer earth-quake npped through central Mexico Thurs-day, devastating portions of the capital, top-pling luxury hotels and skyscrapers, igniting hundreds of fires and taking a heavy toll of life Channel 13, a Mexico City TV station, said there were at least 250 confirmed deaths and thousands of injured, but the toll was ex-pected to rise as rescuers dug out bodies from the rubble The quake, with a magnitude of 7.8 on the open- ende- d Richter scale, was centered on land, a few miles from the Pacific coast, be-tween the mouth of the Rio Balsas nver and the town of Arteaga. It struck at 7 18 a-- m. ( 8 18 am. CDT), rush hour for Mexico City, when millions were on the streets, on their way to workor school. Colleges to heighten statewide awareness By Amy Beth Bernstein Missourtsn staff writer Missouri's private and public col-leges and universities are uniting in a campaign, said to be the first of its kind in the nation, to convince Ms- souna- ns of the value of higher edu-cation. Leading officials from the institu-tions are gathering Friday in Kan-sas dry to plan their strategy for in-creasing public awareness of higher education's contributions and Us fi-nancialneeds University of Missouri President Peter Magrath and Shaila Aery, commissioner of the Missouri Coor-dinating Board for Higher Educa-tion, will be among the participants " We want the public to get a bet-ter idea of tbe size and scope c high-er educa& on and to get a better idea of the return on their investment" said Doug Arnold, director of the campaign tentatively called Jffis- souna- ns for Higher Education. " To our knowledge, this is tiie first joint campaign with public and pri-vate two- ye- ar and four- ye- ar institu-tions ever attempted in the nation" Arnold said. The campaign has four goals. - To restore state commitment to higher education. To encourage greater gift sup-port from private individuals and or-ganizations. - To better serve the citizens of the state by discovering and devel-oping new markets for educational services An example would be pro-moting colleges and universities as ' We want the public to get a better idea of the size and scope of higher education and to get a better idea of the return on their investment. Arnold said the university and col-lege leaders will discuss projects he is recommending at the meeting Arnold is suggesting reaching out to Missouri's population through news stones, speakers and public fo-rums and displays " The simple common denomina-tor that links all Missouri colleges and universities" Arnold said, " is better service to people and organi-zations that make up the state com-munity. Under the proposed routes, up to IflUb shmnvnte of' nuclear waste would pass annually through the state Nuclear- wast- e laden trucks would travel Highway 44 from St Louis to Jopkn, Highway 70 from St Loans to Kansas CSy and on Routes 29 and 35 through Northeastern Mis-souri. The Department of Energy is con-sidering two plans for the transpor-tation of tte waste to permanent dis-posal sites in the western United States. Under one, it would be transported to a central cotkcting station, known as a Monitored Retrievable Storage Facility, in Tennessee. It would be processed and held there until permanent sites were ready, probably in 1998. The 1985 fall harvest will be a bittersweet one for Laux. He is facing the lowest ccmmodity prices smce the ten- bustin- g years of 1978 and 1977. Laux farms 800 acres of row crops divided among 500 acres of soybeans, 200 acres of corn and 100 acres ofsorghum. " I'm expecting my com to pro-duce 100 to 120 bushels per acre and the beans should be between 40 and 45 bushels" Laux said. Such production would double last year's harvest. ' Trodoction is increased consid-erably, but I don't foresee any price increase coming that fa going to help us too much,' Laux said. ' In the past five years we -- haven't bad a crop. We have bad droughts, floods, more droughts and everything else to go along with ft." This year the disaster is file market prices, be said. The demand for corn and soybeans has remained stable wbSe the supply has sky-rocketed. Figures released by the Statisti-cal Crop and Livestock Reporting Service predict a record harvest of sorghum and soybeans. Average yield for the state soybean crop is estimated at 34 breads per acre and sorghum at 84 bosheb per acre. The previous record for soy-beans was reasded at J3 butheb per acre in 1977. For sorgbtan the record is sO bushels, produced in 1979. The state yield of com is slated for 101 bushels per acre, three below the record set in 1981. Total prodacticn of soybeans is scheduled for 176 munon bushels representing a 62 percent increase from 1964.
